Today, while sitting next to a communist, George W. Bush said, “…[China’s] society must become less export driven and more consumer driven.”
As it stands right now, the USA is the only superpower in the world and we control everything. It won’t remain that way. The primary, immediate reason is just what Dubya said today. Americans are mostly consumers.

Consumerism is the problem, not the solution. The Chinese are smart enough to know this.
May I remind you this is the same president that right after 9/11 recommended that the best response was for Americans to go shopping?

New York State of Mind obviously has no economic training whatsoever. The strength of this nation and it’s economy was built on savings. With savings comes investment. Savings keep down inflation.
Our government overlords have seen to it that our savings are stolen through inflation and regulation.
Do you know that the savings rate is in the negative for this country? Do you have any idea how close we are spinning out of control?

Don’t put all your eggs in the “savings made this country strong” basket. Simply put, saving involves not spending all of one’s income. Are you with me so far? That means there exists insufficient demand for business output…goods and materials. Thus, excessive saving corresponds to an unwanted accumulation of inventories, or what classical economists called a ‘general glut.’ This glut of unsold goods and materials encourages businesses to decrease both production and employment. They make less product…and they fire or lay-off workers. What does this do? It lowers people’s incomes…thus savings decrease. Ask the folks at GM.
So many variables exist in economics…attempting to point to one or two items as the causes for success or failure is patently ridiculous.
Well, we don’t have enough money right now to be consumers OR savers. :P We’re praying that changes.
Veritas, obviously there has to be some balance, but if people are spending and not saving, eventually something will happen - say, a sudden unexpected surgery - that will have them scrambling. More debt is created. Or what if no one saves? When people get to retiring age they will not be able to retire. And jobs for seniors don’t pay a lot. I think we’re going to have serious problems. And these people aren’t going to look back and say, “gee, I’m so glad I got all that new stuff way back when. It’s in the dump now, and I’m living in a dump, but hey, it was worth it!”
