Tombstone theology, part II
April 12th, 2005What I should’ve included in that last Tombstone post is this…
Just prior to where I began quoting previously, Wyatt says, “How are we feeling today, Doc?”
Doc: “I’m dying. How are you?”
Wyatt: “Pretty much the same.”
Doc: “So now we can add ‘self-pity’ to your list of frailties.”
There’s a lot of wisdom in that last line I quoted of Doc’s. Self-pity is not a “frailty,” as he put it. It’s a very dangerous flaw that will kill you if you indulge it. It’s a weapon in a spiritual war. It opens all kinds of doors to your enemy that are hard to close. Don’t EVER feel sorry for yourself. Not for a second. Not ever. Not for any reason. It’s a trap.
A trap that seems to lay in wait for me, freshly baited, every day.
Once again, I’m preaching to me. I hope y’all get something helpful from listening in on my thoughts.
Wasn’t Doc Holliday feigning being incapacitated so Wyatt wouldn’t suspect what he was planning to do?
The best part of that piece of propaganda about woman in combat called “G.I. Jodie,” “G.I. Jane,” or something like that was the poem about the little bird. It ended with the little bird freezing to death on a wire, never having felt sorry for himself. It made you realize that that little tweety bird had more toughness than any of us.
DC,
Off topic, but I don’t have your e-mail address.
Some time ago Vox posted a list of things to teach a boy.
You’ve talked about how much your father taught you more in 12 years.
I’m raising a boy and think I’m doing a good job, but am also in the continiuos improvement mode.
I value the things you write/say and would like to see what your list for a boy includes. Since you’re raising girls, I wouldn’t be surprised to see you post two lists.
Could you post your list so I can compare it to mine.
Thanks,
ajw308
Disregard my first comment. Doc was feigning, Wyatt was complaining, Doc called him on it. Good for Doc, he was the only one who could shoot anyway.
ajw.
The first thing I’ll teach my son when I have one someday is proper timeline and memorization of Tombstone.
Just kidding, but the scene I was quoting is at the very end of the movie when Doc really does die.
I’ll give that list some thought and see what I can come up with.
Oh yeah, your freezing tweety bird reference went right over my head. I have some self-destructive habits but watching Demi Moore movies isn’t among them.
I refused to watch Striptease with Demi Moore. I’ll watch any military movie out there, Seige on Firebase Gloria being one of my favorites since it has no silly romance subplots, superfluous women, or PC content.
I went in knowing that the one-armed pushups and such were done by a body double, not Demi. I wanted to see the G.I. stuff.
Anyway, the poem was poingant to me and while forgetting it word-for-word, I did not forget the point it made.
ajw,
Two suggestions:
Raising a Modern-Day Knight, Robert Lewis
Wild at Heart, John Elderedge
some good stuff.
hm. All I remember is “Ah’ll be yo’ huckleberry”. I guess I should look a little deeper next time I see it.
Good post, you are absolutely right. Self-pity is a nasty little hanger-on.
My favorite line is probably still the “…and hell is coming with me!” line. Great movie, great great movie. (I say this after recently being converted to “Lonesome Dove,” too.)
Noticed you took Nate off the blog roll. Hmm…
And whose blog is “tent pegs”?
Noticed you took Nate off the blog roll. Hmm…
I’m sure it will break his heart. I had a number of reasons for doing that. The primary one is that I was never on his in the first place. Secondary reasons include the fact that he has outright refused to read what I write here but still wants to attack me over what he’s heard was here. I still read his blog occasionally but I won’t be commenting there on anything of significance because Nate thrives on the fight instead of the facts.
I still like Nate, but I don’t have much patience for people who try to bait me back into a debate that I’ve let go because the debate’s pointless. In addition, I’ve publicly apologized, more than once, for getting carried away in our debate and being obnoxious (not that Nate would know because he’s told me recently in an email that he refuses to read my blog). Nate and Gregg were both at least as out of line as I was but what I’ve gotten in exchange is baited and attacked.
Homey don’t play dat. And since I’ve already probably said more than I should’ve, I’ll not be addressing this any further. As far as I’m concerned (and as far as I know), I’m still on friendly terms with Nate. I’m just not gonna play the game.
As for Tent Pegs, go see for yourself. I’ve never met the guy or even had any online contact with him, but I love his blog. You will too, Elena.
I just followed his link from Arielle’s blog and am going to put a link from mine, too. I’d love to meet the guy and he’s from the state I spent the first 20 years of my life in – Michigan. Too cold for me and I don’t fit in the north because even though I was born and raised there, I have found I am a southerner at heart and would have been on the southern side of the War of Northern Agression. It helps to study things on your own because you do not get the truth in government schools. That is one reason I have chosen to home educate among many reasons. BTW, I am the grandmother of a grandson born at home early Sunday morning. He is just beautiful!
love and shalom,
Serena
Oh, I liked Tent Pegs, Elena! And another Michigander. Based on those two things alone, you should like him. ;)
Tent Pegs just added to my list of daily reads. Marvelous brain the man has.
As Gandalf asked, “Is it safe?” As in F-bomb and vulgarity free? Or do I need to wait till I’m not at work to read it?
Quite safe, Elena.
He’s a pastor, Elena. I love Bane but you don’t see him linked here, do you? I don’t link to anything here that I wouldn’t show my Mama (in part, because she reads here sometimes). That’s an additional reason for removing Nate.
(I do have to say that Hog on Ice is a little questionable and probably should be removed, too. I’ll have to ponder that.)
Do you think I would tell you that you would love it if it wasn’t even safe for work? In the words of Bugs Bunny, “She don’t know me very well, do she?”
Well, on the level of Bane is one thing, but even Vox lets the F-bomb slip on occasion… And some of his commenters (ahem, cedarford) use it as well.
No, I didn’t think you’d suggest anything nasty, but what a guy thinks is OK and what I might think is OK may be two different things. And I know that you have a good sense of humor to go with your zeal for the Lord.
By the way, I watched two TV preachers last night—talked about prosperity. Shocking! I mean, that I would watch them. But they actually were balanced. And what they taught was good. I’ll have to post it sometime. God said, Girl, don’t you tell Me who I can and cannot use to teach you. That’s a hmm, what?! complete with chicken-head-nod, if I ever did hear one!
Just visited Mr. Tent Pegs. Y’all are right. Good stuff. Will blogroll him…if I ever get a blogroll.
Ciao, dahlings!
